As part of the ongoing prisoner exchange process in the Gaza Strip, HAMAS has released three Israeli hostages. The transfer of the captives to Israeli military representatives was confirmed by the International Committee of the Red Cross.
According to an official statement from the Israeli army, the released individuals are 56-year-old Ohad Ben Ami, 52-year-old Eli Sharabi, and 34-year-old Or Levi. Their release was carried out as part of a pre-arranged exchange agreement.
The Times of Israel reports that the three hostages were handed over to Israeli security forces in Gaza and will soon be returned to Israeli territory.
Or Levi was kidnapped on October 7, 2023, at the Nova music festival. His wife, Einav, was killed during the attack. Eli Sharabi was taken hostage from Kibbutz Be’eri, where his wife and daughters were murdered, and his brother Yossi died in captivity. Ohad Ben Ami and his wife, Raz Ben Ami, were also kidnapped from Be’eri, but Raz was released in November 2023 as part of a ceasefire agreement.
As part of this exchange, the Israeli government has also fulfilled its commitments. Official reports indicate that Israel is expected to release 183 Palestinian prisoners today, including 18 serving life sentences.
On January 16, 2025, Israel, HAMAS, the U.S., and Qatar formally signed an agreement in Doha to release hostages and establish a ceasefire in Gaza. The agreement took effect on January 19, with HAMAS releasing three Israeli captives and Israel freeing 90 Palestinian prisoners.
On January 25, the second phase of the agreement took place, in which four Israeli women held in Gaza were exchanged for 200 Palestinian prisoners.
On February 1, HAMAS released three more Israeli hostages, while Israel freed 83 Palestinian prisoners.
