Hatay rises from the ruins after earthquakes
World
Three years after two devastating earthquakes that struck southern Turkey and northern Syria, the city of Hatay shows signs of recovery.
The earthquakes, with magnitudes of 7.7 and 7.6 and epicenter in Kahramanmaraş, claimed over 50,000 lives across 11 provinces. In Hatay alone, 24,147 people died, and more than 90,000 buildings were destroyed.
Today, Hatay looks different: residential and administrative buildings have been restored, roads repaired, and damaged historical landmarks reconstructed according to their original appearance. Residents describe the city as having “risen from the ashes like a phoenix,” thanks to ongoing recovery efforts.
Experts emphasize that the restoration is gradual but steady, demonstrating the resilience and strength of the local community in the face of one of the century’s most catastrophic disasters.
