Hezbollah Appoints New Leader
World
The Shura Council of Lebanon's Hezbollah has elected Hashem Safi al-Din, a cousin of the late leader Hassan Nasrallah, as the new Secretary General. Nasrallah was killed in an Israeli airstrike on Beirut.
Safi al-Din, previously the head of Hezbollah's Executive Council, is also a co-founder of the group. Born in 1964, he studied alongside Nasrallah in Najaf and Qom. He has been responsible for the group's internal affairs for several decades.
Though he kept a low public profile, Safi al-Din gained more visibility as Nasrallah reduced his public appearances due to security concerns. In 2017, he was listed as a terrorist by both the U.S. and Saudi Arabia.
Following Nasrallah's death, Hezbollah leadership confirmed that they will continue their fight in support of Gaza, Palestine, and Lebanon.
