International court set to hear genocide case against Israel
Since early October last year, the Israeli army has been carrying out a military operation in the Gaza Strip against the radical Palestinian group Hamas, which is recognised as a terrorist organisation in the US and the European Union. Thousands of Palestinians have been killed as a result of this operation.

It will be recalled that the Gaza operation was triggered by the jihadist attack on southern Israel on 7 October last year, in which more than 1,400 people were killed and more than 200 were kidnapped and taken to Gaza. Some of the hostages, mostly women and children, were later released from Palestinian prisons. Hamas still holds more than 100 people in Gaza, according to the latest figures.

According to the Hamas-controlled Health Ministry, more than 22,000 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed in the Strip due to Israeli attacks. Many countries accuse Israel of brutality, while the Israeli army blames Hamas for the civilian deaths. The Israeli military says the jihadists have placed their infrastructure among civilian structures and use the population as human shields.

On the first day of the trial in The Hague, hundreds of people carrying Israeli flags and portraits of hostages took to the streets of the city and marched towards the courthouse. Pro-Palestinian activists also demonstrated, holding placards calling for an end to the killing in Gaza.
