The Israeli army has ordered a mass evacuation of Palestinians from large parts of Khan Younis, signaling a potential new ground assault on Gaza’s second-largest city, The Associated Press reports.

The evacuation order indicates that Khan Younis may be the latest focus of Israeli military operations aimed at regrouping Hamas militants. The city has already suffered extensive damage from a prolonged assault earlier this year. Many Palestinians had relocated to Khan Younis from Rafah, another city in southern Gaza, to escape previous Israeli offensives.

"We received a message on our mobile phones to evacuate," said Zeinab Abu Jazar, a displaced woman from Khan Younis. "Look at these children, how they walk. We did not find a car to ride in."

The Israeli army has directed evacuees to move to Muwasi, a coastal area designated as a safe zone, now overwhelmed with crowded and unsanitary tent camps.

Israel's current offensive began in response to Hamas' October 7 attack, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 1,200 people across southern Israel and the taking of 250 hostages. According to Gaza’s Health Ministry, the Israeli campaign has since resulted in the deaths of at least 37,900 Palestinians, although the ministry does not specify the breakdown between civilians and fighters.
