Japan makes its first ever promotion of a woman to the rank of Admiral
Japan's Ministry of Defence has decided to award the highest rank of admiral to a woman for the first time in the country's history. The title was awarded to 57-year-old Natsue Kondo. Previously, she held the rank of vice-admiral and headed the Naval High Command Training School.

She will now become commander of Japan's coastal defence force, the ministry said in a statement.

It is noted that even in the country's land and air forces, women have never received the highest general rank.

Currently, the Ministry of Defence of Japan is implementing a programme to increase the number of women in command positions in the armed forces. It is expected that by 2025 they will make up at least 5 per cent of officers and generals in the ranks of major and above.
