The head of Chechnya is trying to lift the sanctions imposed on him and his family members by the USA. To do this, he proposes to release Ukrainian prisoners of war.
The head of Chechnya Ramzan Kadyrov offered the US authorities to lift the sanctions imposed on his relatives in exchange for the release of Ukrainian prisoners of war. This is reported by "RIA Novosti".
Kadyrov reportedly handed over the list of captives to former US intelligence officer Scott Ritter, who arrived in Grozny the previous day. According to the Chechen head, in return for the release of people captured in Donetsk and Luhansk, Ramzan Kadyrov offers to lift sanctions on his mother, daughters, "innocent people" and horses.
Sanctions against Kadyrov
In September 2022, the US Treasury Department announced sanctions against Ramzan Kadyrov and his immediate family because of Russia's war against Ukraine. In addition to him, his wives Medni, Fatima and Aminat, adult daughters Aishat, Karina and Tabarik fell under sanctions.
Two years earlier, in July 2020, the US State Department imposed sanctions against Ramzan Kadyrov, his wife Medni Kadyrova and daughters Aishat and Karina Kadyrov over numerous human rights violations in Chechnya. The penalties involved restrictions on entry to the US.
In 2017, Kadyrov was placed on the sanctions list. The sanctions concerned assets and the ability to enter the US. The US Treasury Department's decision on sanctions against Kadyrov stated that the head of Chechnya is responsible for murder, torture, and other large-scale violations of internationally recognised human rights.
