According to former royal butler Paul Burrell, Charles III plans to abdicate within the next 10 years in favour of his eldest son, Prince William.

King Charles III intends to abdicate the throne
Burrell noted in an interview for the New York Post (NYP) that at the time of Charles III's coronation there was no indication that he was thinking of abdicating, but during his eight-month reign his health deteriorated. This desire to abdicate also reinforced the passing of Denmark's Queen Margrethe II in December 2023. According to Burrell, the British monarch plans to implement at least some of his reforms in the near future and then retire.

"I think he will work hard for 10 years and then say it’s time for retirement and watch his son blossom. I think the country will embrace a new, young king and qQueen and it will complete the circle that Diana’s son will be king," Burrell noted.
