Kyrgyzstan Plans to Strengthen Border Control with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan
Uzbekistan
Kyrgyzstan plans to tighten transport control at its borders with Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. The country’s government has put the relevant decision up for public discussion, according to Kazinform.
Currently, Kyrgyzstan’s automobile transport control on the external border of the Eurasian Economic Union is carried out at the following checkpoints:
"Torugart", "Irkeshtam" (China);
"Karamyk", "Kyzyl-Bel", "Kulundu" (Tajikistan);
"Dostuk" (Uzbekistan).
However, transport control is not implemented at the following checkpoints on the Kyrgyz-Tajik and Kyrgyz-Uzbek state borders: "Kayragach", "Bor-Dobo" (Tajikistan), "Kyzyl-Kiya", "Kara-Bagysh", and "Ken-Say" (Uzbekistan).
Through these checkpoints, neighboring countries transport goods not only on a bilateral basis but also to Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, Russia, and other countries. As a result, international agreements on automobile transport are being violated.
Foreign freight carriers must obtain the necessary permits to enter Kyrgyzstan or transit through its territory. If international agreements are violated, including entry without the required permits, such carriers may be banned from entering Kyrgyzstan.
In this regard, changes to the list of border checkpoints with Tajikistan and Uzbekistan have been proposed.
