Argentine footballer Lionel Messi has won the Ballon d'Or for the eighth time. The Argentine captain won the World Cup in Qatar last year and was recognised as the best player of the competition.

Argentine footballer Lionel Messi, who plays for American club Inter Miami, became the owner of the Ballon d'Or, awarded to the best player of the world season-2022/2023, according to the interpretation of the French magazine France Football. The award ceremony took place at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris.

In the voting, Norwegian striker of English club Manchester City Erling Holland came second, while Kylian Mbappe, a striker of French club Paris Saint-Germain, came third.

Messi holds the record for receiving this award, with eight honours to his credit. Previously, the Argentine won the Ballon d'Or in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015, 2019 and 2021. For the first time in history, the prize was awarded to a player who at the time of the award did not play in any of the European clubs. Messi spent last season at Paris Saint-Germain, with whom he became French champion for the second time and won the country's Super Cup. In the season-2022/23 player in 41 matches scored 21 goals and gave 20 goal assists.
