Macron Highlights Restrictions on Tanker Arrests
World
France has released a detained oil tanker in the Mediterranean, President Emmanuel Macron said during a phone call with his Ukrainian counterpart. He noted that full-scale tanker seizures would require changes to national legislation, which have not yet occurred.
According to Macron, all cases of tanker detention by EU countries end with the release of the vessels. Claims of a Russian “shadow fleet,” which could justify such actions, were not confirmed.
International law guarantees the principle of freedom of the open sea and prohibits the seizure of foreign ships, except in cases of piracy or false flag operations. Attempting to seize a foreign tanker could be interpreted as a de facto declaration of war.
