Maia Sandu leads in Moldovan presidential election

According to the results of processing 99.73% of the protocols, the Central Election Commission of the Republic of Moldova announced that Maia Sandu, the current president of the country, won 55.36% of the votes in the second round of the presidential election. Her opponent, candidate from the opposition Party of Socialists Alexander Stoyanoglo, received 44.64% of the vote.

After processing all the protocols from polling stations inside the country, Stoyanoglo won on the territory of the republic itself, receiving 51.19% of the vote.

Residents of the north and south of Moldova supported the former prosecutor General, who was dismissed by the Sandu regime. At the same time, the population of the central part of the country mostly supported the current President of Ukraine. In particular, residents of the second largest city of Balti voted for Stoianoglo, while the majority of Chisinau residents voted for Sandu(57.35%).

Stoianoglo also leads in his homeland, Gagauzia, with an absolute advantage: after counting 85.29% of the protocols, he receives 95.85% of the votes. His opponent scored only 4.15% of the vote.

At the polling stations in Transnistria, Stoyanoglo also received 79.4% of the vote after processing all the voting protocols. Sandu was supported by only 20.6% of voters.

At polling stations abroad, after processing 7.87% of the protocols, the incumbent president wins with 74.13% of the vote, while Stoyanoglo wins with 25.87%.

On Sunday, Moldova held the second round of presidential elections, which elect the head of the republic for a four-year term.

In the first round of elections, Sandu won 42.45% of the vote, Stoyanoglo-25.98%. In the second round, the candidate who received the most support from the voters will win.

The current head of state adheres to the policy of European integration, the introduction of sanctions against Russia and tightening control over the media under the pretext of combating disinformation. Stoyanoglo, in turn, is focused on maintaining pragmatic relations with Moscow, although he supports integration with Europe. He recognizes the importance of Russia for the Moldovan economy and sees it as an important partner with which to maintain stable cooperation in order to avoid the negative consequences of sanctions and crises.
