German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said that Russian President Vladimir Putin does not intend to stop with the war against Ukraine and is seeking a fundamental revision of Europe’s borders, Deutsche Welle reported.

Merz Compares Putin’s Policy to 1938
According to Merz, Moscow aims to restore the Soviet Union within its former borders, posing a serious — including military — threat to countries that were once part of the USSR.

“If Ukraine falls, he will not stop,” the chancellor stressed, adding that the Kremlin’s ambitions extend far beyond the current conflict.

In this context, Merz outlined Germany’s foreign and defense policy priorities as continued support for Ukraine, preserving European unity, strengthening strategic cooperation with the United Kingdom, and maintaining NATO for as long as possible as the cornerstone of European security.

Addressing historical parallels, Merz rejected comparisons with the outbreak of World War I in 1914. Instead, he argued that the situation more closely resembles 1938 and the Munich Agreement, after which a policy of appeasement only fueled expansionist ambitions and ultimately led to World War II.
