Metapneumovirus Infection — More Dangerous than COVID-19!?
World
Cases of metapneumovirus infection are reported every year in all countries around the world. In neighboring Kazakhstan, a seasonal rise in cases of acute respiratory viral infections and influenza is also being observed, and metapneumovirus has been identified, as announced by the Ministry of Health. The Sanitary and Epidemiological Center of Uzbekistan also provided official information on this virus.
Metapneumovirus was first identified in 2001 and primarily spreads through airborne droplets, with rare cases of transmission through contact with contaminated surfaces. The virus is most active during the fall and winter months.
Metapneumovirus infection typically manifests as acute respiratory infections, with symptoms such as runny nose, cough, and fever. In some cases, it can lead to bronchiolitis and pneumonia. Most people infected with metapneumovirus recover without complications.
Currently, Uzbekistan is also witnessing a seasonal rise in cases of acute respiratory infections.
According to the latest laboratory tests, the following viruses have been identified: 36.9% influenza, 30.2% rhinovirus, 28.6% respiratory syncytial virus, 1.2% metapneumovirus, and 3.1% other viruses.
To prevent infection with these viruses, it is recommended to:
Follow preventive and hygiene measures;
Limit visits to crowded places, especially with young children;
Isolate family members showing symptoms of illness and follow the doctor's recommendations.
