Due to the sanctions imposed against Russia amid the war in Ukraine, sports citizenship of other countries allows Russian athletes to compete in international competitions. Among the Russians who have changed sports citizenship, most of all are chess players.

More than 200 Russian athletes changed sports citizenship
At least 204 Russian athletes, including world and European champions in their respective sports, have changed their sports citizenship to continue training and participating in international competitions amid sanctions against Russia. This is reported by the online edition "Holod".

It is noted that most athletes have not publicly announced the change of sports citizenship, so such decisions become known only during the competition, when going through the registration procedure.

In general, due to the sanctions imposed against Russia against the backdrop of the war in Ukraine, sports citizenship of other countries allows Russian athletes to participate in international competitions.

According to the publication, among the Russians who have changed sports citizenship, most of all are chess players. Between 2022 and 2023, 141 Russians changed their flag in this sport.
