Narges Mohammadi: Jailed Iranian Nobel laureate begins hunger strike
Iranian human rights activist Nargiz Mohammadi, who won the Nobel Peace Prize a month ago, went on hunger strike in prison. This is reported by the BBC with reference to her family.

It is noted that 51-year-old Mohammadi protests against the fact that she and other prisoners were not provided with medical care and forced to wear hijab. Last week, prison doctors refused to treat Nargiz Mohammadi because she refused to cover her hair with a headscarf.

The prosecutor has been opposing Ms Mohammadi's transfer to a hospital for treatment for a week, despite repeated appeals to prison authorities and the judiciary.

"She needs treatment for heart and lung conditions but a prosecutor is blocking her transfer to hospital," the family said in a statement.

According to a diagnosis and echocardiogram by the prison's trusted doctor, she needs urgent transfer to a cardiac centre for emergency treatment.

"The requirement that female inmates must wear a hijab in order to be hospitalised is inhumane and morally unacceptable," Nobel Committee chairwoman Berit Reiss-Andersen said.

Iran's judiciary and prison authorities have not commented on the incident.

Ms Mohammadi, the vice-president of the Defenders of Human Rights Center in Iran, has been arrested 13 times, convicted five times and sentenced to a total of 31 years in prison. She has also been sentenced to 154 lashes, although it is unclear whether that punishment has been carried out.
