Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the Syrian border, calling the change of power in Damascus a “historic day” in the history of the Middle East. According to him, the fall of the Assad regime resulted from Israel’s strikes against Iran and the Lebanese group Hezbollah.

“This is a historic day in the history of the Middle East. The Assad regime was the central link in Iran’s axis of evil — this regime has collapsed,” The Times of Israel quoted Netanyahu as saying.

Netanyahu emphasized that the change of power in Damascus opens “new opportunities” for Israel. “We are ready to extend a hand of friendship to all Syrians who wish to live in peace with us. However, we will not allow hostile forces to strengthen near our borders,” the Prime Minister said.

Ahead of Netanyahu’s visit, Israeli forces took control of the buffer zone on the Golan Heights. The Prime Minister explained this move by citing the collapse of the 1974 disengagement agreement after the withdrawal of Syrian troops from the area.

“Israel is taking necessary measures to ensure the security of its borders,” he added.

These developments are seen as part of Israel’s strategy to further consolidate its political position in the region.
