New Nuclear Aircraft Carrier for €10 Billion to Become Europe's Flagship
Technology
France has confirmed an ambitious defense project despite the strained state of public finances. The new Porte-Avions Nouvelle Génération (PA-NG) nuclear aircraft carrier, costing over 10 billion euros, will become the largest warship in Europe and replace the current flagship, the "Charles de Gaulle."
French President Emmanuel Macron officially announced the launch of the program to build a new generation nuclear aircraft carrier, Porte-Avions Nouvelle Génération (PA-NG). This decision was made despite criticism from politicians who called for the project to be postponed due to the country's difficult financial situation.
"In an age of predators, we must be strong to be feared, and especially strong at sea," Macron said, addressing troops in Abu Dhabi.
Key characteristics of the future flagship:
Entry into service: scheduled for 2038.
Replacement: will replace the current aircraft carrier "Charles de Gaulle" (in service since 2001).
Dimensions: displacement of 78,000 tons, length of 310 meters. This will make it the largest warship in Europe, although it will be smaller than the American aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Ford.
Technology: the ship will receive a nuclear power plant and electromagnetic catapults (EMALS) for launching aircraft. The air wing will be based on Rafale M fighters.
Cost: the total program budget is estimated at 10.25 billion euros.
Industry: about 800 supplier companies will be involved in the project, mainly small and medium-sized businesses.
French Minister of the Armed Forces, Catherine Vautrin, emphasized that the new aircraft carrier will ensure the ability to conduct high-intensity operations far from its shores. Work on key components, including the nuclear plant, is already underway.
