Uzbekistan’s president has appointed Sohibjon Murodov as director of the State Assets Management Agency, following large-scale inspections and reported embezzlement cases within the system.

New State Assets chief appointed after major scandal
Murodov previously headed the Center for the Organization of Electronic Online Auctions under the agency. Earlier in his career, he served as deputy head of the Internal Security Inspectorate of the State Competition Committee.

The appointment comes after the president announced major violations at the State Assets Agency and Uzbekneftegaz in late January. According to the president, in one case a land plot with a market value of at least 250 billion soums was sold at a closed auction for 120 billion soums.

Following the inspections, the agency’s previous director, Akmalkhon Ortikov, was dismissed. The State Security Service and the compliance unit launched an audit, and economic security specialists were involved in the investigation. Reports later indicated that a criminal case had been opened against the former head.
