At yesterday's plenary session of the Senate, Chairman of the Central Bank of Uzbekistan Mamarizo Nurmuratov answered the question why the volume of foreign currency deposits increased by nine percent last year.

The head of the regulator said that since the beginning of 2022, more than 60 thousand non-residents have opened accounts in banks of Uzbekistan and their funds amount to about $ 892 million. This represents about 15 percent of the total retail deposits ($6 billion).

"The situation is not related to an increase in the level of public confidence in banks, but to the fact that non—residents have increased the number of accounts opened in banks in Uzbekistan," he added.

According to the regulator's website, in February 2022, the total deposit portfolio of Uzbek banks amounted to 149.5 trillion sums, and as of May 1 of this year, the figure reached 208.5 trillion sums, an increase of 39.5 percent.
