North Korea on 19 September 2018 terminated an agreement to reduce military tensions with South Korea, the DPRK Defence Ministry said.

North Korea cancels reciprocity deal with South Korea
"We will abandon the measures taken to reduce military tensions in all spaces: land, sea and air, and deploy powerful troops and modern weapons in border areas," the ministry's statement was quoted by the (KCNA) as saying.

The DPRK accused South Korea of "deliberate and provocative manoeuvres" that made the situation "uncontrollable".

Earlier, South Korea partially suspended the implementation of the 2018 agreement after North Korea announced the successful launch of the Mulligan-1 reconnaissance satellite. The North Korean government described the launch as a legitimate self-defence measure as neighbouring countries were conducting "dangerous military manoeuvres".

In late May, North Korea made its first attempt to orbit the Mulligen-1 military reconnaissance satellite on a Chollima-1 rocket when a second-stage engine malfunction caused the rocket to fall into the Yellow Sea. A second failed attempt occurred in late August - this time the problem was caused by an error in the emergency self-destruct system during operation of the rocket's third stage.
