Uzbekistan

From April 5 to 9, 2025, Tashkent is hosting a major international event — the 150th anniversary assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). As part of this prestigious forum, President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev is scheduled to deliver a speech at the IPU Assembly’s plenary session today.

The President is expected to address key global issues such as international security, sustainable development, and the strengthening of inter-parliamentary dialogue. A series of bilateral meetings with leaders of international parliamentary institutions are also planned.

This Assembly holds historic significance due to its scale and the number of participants. Around 2,000 delegates are attending, representing 180 countries, 15 observer states, and more than 25 international and inter-parliamentary organizations.

During the Assembly, all main IPU bodies are holding meetings, including:

Four thematic standing committees,

The Forum of Young Parliamentarians,

Committees on the Human Rights of Parliamentarians and Middle East Affairs,

A special event marking the 40th anniversary of the Forum of Women Parliamentarians.

The event will conclude with the adoption of key documents — the IPU resolutions and the Tashkent Declaration. The declaration will outline priority areas for inter-parliamentary cooperation in the pursuit of sustainable development, peace, and global solidarity.

It is worth noting that the Inter-Parliamentary Union was founded in 1889 and currently unites 181 national parliaments and 15 regional parliamentary bodies, making it the largest international parliamentary platform. Belize is expected to join the IPU as a new member during the current Assembly.

The agreement to host the jubilee assembly in Tashkent was signed a year ago in Geneva by Chairperson of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbayeva and IPU Secretary General Martin Chungong.
