On April 4, within the framework of the Samarkand Climate Forum, the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, received the UN Deputy Secretary-General and Executive Secretary of the UN Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), Tatiana Molchan.
At the beginning of the meeting, the distinguished guest conveyed the greetings and sincere wishes of UN Secretary-General António Guterres to the head of state.
The President of Uzbekistan highlighted the commission’s key role in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030, as well as the expert support provided to Uzbekistan in various areas, including transport, innovation, textiles, energy, ecology, gender equality, and the country’s accession to the World Trade Organization (WTO).
Discussions focused on the implementation of regional and national projects, as well as the practical promotion of initiatives proposed by the President of Uzbekistan at the first summit of the UN Special Programme for the Economies of Central Asia (SPECA), held in Baku in November 2023.
It was noted with satisfaction that, at Uzbekistan's initiative, the SPECA Development Concept until 2030 was adopted, a "roadmap" for simplifying trade procedures was signed with UNECE, and comprehensive measures for digitalization and document exchange within the Trans-Caspian corridor are being systematically implemented.
At the beginning of the year, with the support of the commission, Uzbekistan joined the Aarhus Convention, ensuring public access to reliable environmental information.
Work is underway to join the Air Convention and the Convention on the Transboundary Effects of Industrial Accidents.
The importance of the prompt launch of the SPECA Target Fund was emphasized.
