On May 27, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev reviewed a presentation on pressing tasks in the railway sector and outlined priority areas for developing transit, infrastructure, and services.

Priorities in the railway sector have been defined
According to the decree of the head of state dated October 10, 2023, large-scale reforms are being implemented in the railway sector of Uzbekistan. "Uzbekistan Railways" Joint-Stock Company has undergone structural transformation: non-core assets have been optimized, redundant functions have been eliminated, and land plots have been transferred. As a result, the previously unprofitable company ended 2024 with a net profit of 47 billion soums. The establishment of the specialized company "Temiryölkargo" allowed for a twofold increase in the efficiency of freight car usage.

The growth of international routes was particularly highlighted: freight trains were launched for the first time in the China-Turkey direction, new trains are actively arriving, and the number of flights is increasing. In this regard, the task was set to gradually expand the capacity of the infrastructure.

The issue is particularly acute in the suburbs of Tashkent, where 70% of the external cargo flow is concentrated at the "Chuqursoy" station. This leads to traffic jams, delays, and additional costs. In order to reduce the burden on the capital, it is proposed to build large freight stations in the Yangiyul district and near New Tashkent, as well as to lay the "Ozodlik - Gulistan" bypass line, which will allow to double the volume of transportation without entering the city.

Among the new projects is the Samarkand - Urgut railway line. Of the planned 54 kilometers, 7 kilometers have already been laid. Two railway stations and two freight stations will be built on the territory of the "Urgut" economic zone.

In addition, issues of improving the quality of railway services were discussed: improving access to railway stations, creating tourist infrastructure, expanding parking lots, purchasing electric trains, and improving passenger service.
