Russian President Vladimir Putin supported the idea of collecting DNA samples from all individuals who have signed contracts with the Ministry of Defense. The proposal to collect DNA was put forward by the head of the "Committee of Families of Homeland Warriors" Yulia Belekhova.

Putin wants to take DNA samples from soldiers "to determine paternity."
"If a serviceman is declared missing, his family is obligated to provide a DNA sample, but not every serviceman has relatives. Of course, this involves temporary physical costs for searching for relatives, collecting samples, and waiting for results. Therefore, the proposal is to make the submission of a DNA sample mandatory when signing the contract. There are orphans who have no relatives, and there is simply no one to take a DNA sample from. In some cases, relationships were not formalized by marriage, but during the special military operation, a child was born, and the serviceman went missing. In such cases, establishing paternity with DNA would be much easier," Belekhova said.

In response, Putin described the determination of paternity and "a number of other issues, including material and housing issues," as "important."

"Therefore, I will, of course, instruct the relevant structures to consider the proposal. These are delicate matters, but I think they protect the interests of our guys who are carrying out the most complex, difficult, and dangerous tasks on the front line. I believe that DNA collection is a good proposal, but of course, we will need to consult with specialists in this field," said Putin.

Deputy Defense Minister Anna Tsivileva, who is Vladimir Putin's cousin, previously reported that the Ministry of Defense of Russia had received 48,000 applications from relatives of Russian soldiers missing in the war in Ukraine for DNA testing.
