In 2025, Russia will begin the transfer of the №1 launch complex at Baikonur, known as the "Gagarin Launch Pad," to Kazakhstan. This is mentioned in the protocol of the Russian-Kazakh intergovernmental commission on the cosmodrome, as reported by "RIA Novosti."
The transfer process will begin in the first half of 2025, but the exact dates and timelines are not specified. According to the document, the responsibility for organizing the process is entrusted to "Roscosmos," Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Emergency Situations (MChS), and Kazakhstan’s Ministry of Finance.
The "Gagarin Launch Pad" is state property of Kazakhstan and has been leased to Russia until 2050. In 2023, "Roscosmos" proposed ending the lease of the Baikonur launch pad from which Yuri Gagarin launched and suggested turning it into a museum.
In April 2024, the Russian government approved an agreement to start testing the "Bayterek" complex, a joint project between Russia and Kazakhstan. Tests with the "Soyuz-5" rocket will begin in 2025, and by 2027, at least three rocket launches are planned from the "Bayterek" launch site.
