Head of the Presidential Administration Saida Mirziyoyeva paid a visit to Urgut district in Uzbekistan’s Samarkand region to review regional development projects and the condition of social infrastructure. The visit focused on economic growth, primary healthcare and water supply issues.

Located near the border with Tajikistan, Urgut is seen as a promising center for logistics and cross-border trade. Saida Mirziyoyeva noted that the new Samarkand–Urgut railway line will reduce costs for businesses and passengers and help lay the groundwork for a future free economic zone.

Under the district’s master plan, authorities intend to build a large trade complex accommodating 800 entrepreneurs and a logistics center capable of handling up to 100 trucks per day. The project includes simplified customs procedures and reduced bureaucracy. It also envisions easier access for Tajik citizens to trade and medical facilities without passport control.

Healthcare conditions were another key focus of the visit. Saida Mirziyoyeva inspected the Navoi polyclinic, built in 1972, which serves more than 13,000 residents from 16 villages and remains the only facility providing maternity services. The building is in need of major renovation, and medical staff face limited resources.

She stressed that the situation reflects a broader systemic problem in primary healthcare, noting that improvements require not only building repairs but also a revision of medical standards and staff training.

Water supply issues were also highlighted as a serious challenge. Aging pumping stations and water losses are already affecting agricultural yields and export potential. The master plan предусматривает bringing more than 10,000 hectares under stable irrigation, reconstructing pumping stations, building small reservoirs and introducing energy-efficient technologies to boost agricultural productivity and exports.
