Samarkand Becomes the Heart of Grand Diplomacy
Uzbekistan
Samarkand has emerged as the diplomatic center of the region—the first day of the "Central Asia – EU" summit was marked by a series of strategically important meetings and symbolic gestures.
On April 3, the first-ever Central Asia – European Union Summit began in Samarkand. On the sidelines of the forum, the leaders of Uzbekistan held negotiations with the presidents of Turkmenistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Tajikistan. The main focus was on expanding bilateral cooperation, strengthening strategic partnerships, developing economic and infrastructure projects, and enhancing humanitarian exchange.
One of the key outcomes was the emphasis on the practical implementation of previously reached agreements, including the launch of industrial cooperation centers, the expansion of cross-border trade, and the increase in trade turnover.
Additionally, as part of the European delegation’s visit, the President of Uzbekistan, Shavkat Mirziyoyev, along with Ursula von der Leyen and António Costa, visited the Eternal City ethnographic park, where they were introduced to Uzbekistan's rich cultural heritage.
The symbolic highlight of the day was a joint gesture: the leaders of the EU and Uzbekistan planted oak trees on the grounds of the Samarkand Congress Center as a sign of long-term and sustainable cooperation.
