Sanctions against the former speaker of the Afghan parliament and his son
According to the Persian News Agency's Afghanistan correspondent, the Afghan Ministry of Finance has imposed sanctions on former Afghan parliament speaker Mir Rahman Rahmani, his son Ajmal Rahmani, a member of the same parliament, and their families on charges of financial corruption.

In addition, the U.S. Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control also imposed sanctions against 44 related entities.

Through their Afghan companies, Rahmani reportedly carried out a complex corrupt procurement scheme that resulted in the misappropriation of millions of dollars from U.S. government-funded contracts that supported Afghan security forces.

In order to secure his election to the Afghan parliament, A. Rahmani paid $1.6 million to certain members of Afghanistan's Independent Election Commission to inflate the election results by thousands of votes.

Similarly, his father, Mir Rahman Rahmani, paid millions of dollars to several MPs during the 2018 parliamentary speaker elections to secure their votes for his candidacy for parliament speaker.

Although Rahmani's primary corrupt activities took place in Afghanistan, Rahmani continues to maintain an international corporate network.

As per an order from the US Treasury Department, all assets and funds of institutions accused of corruption in the US have been seized.
