Diabetes has a number of dangerous complications. For example, prolonged high blood glucose levels can lead to deterioration of vision or even its loss. This pathology in medicine is called diabetic retinopathy. However…

However, these complications that occur at a late stage actually start much earlier, with hidden symptoms. Therefore, patients with diabetes mellitus are recommended to have frequent ophthalmological examinations.

Russian scientists have found a way to simplify this process even further. The neural network they have created allows them to identify retinal pathologies caused by diabetes using eye photos.

The innovation works on the basis of a mathematical model. That is, using a mathematical model, it is possible to detect diabetic retinopathy at an early stage of the disease with an accuracy of 88.7%. To do this, it is enough to insert the patient's eye scans into the neural network.

The model created by the scientists can recognise diabetic retinopathy in eye photographs by such signs as haemorrhage, lipid accumulation, blood vessel growth and thinning of their walls.
