Strong earthquake hits Myanmar and Thailand

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar. Twelve minutes later, another tremor measuring 6.4 hit the region. The Thai government has declared a state of emergency, suspending operations at all airports across the country. Dozens of workers remain trapped under the rubble.

The epicenter of the earthquake was located northwest of Sagaing. Residents of Yangon, Myanmar’s former capital, reported running into the streets in panic.

Media reports indicate significant destruction in Myanmar. A bridge over the Irrawaddy River, connecting Sagaing with the city of Ava, has collapsed.

Reports of damage have also emerged from Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, where tremors were felt despite being nearly 1,400 km from the epicenter. A video circulating on social media shows the collapse of an unfinished skyscraper. According to AFP, dozens of workers are trapped under the debris.

The Thai government has declared a state of emergency. All airport operations in the country have been suspended.

According to news agencies, tremors were also felt in Bangladesh, India, Laos, and China. No confirmed casualties have been reported so far.
