Tashkent among the world's five cheapest cities
World
The most expensive cities to live in are Singapore and Zurich, and the cheapest is Damascus.
The Economist Intelligence Unit has published a new study of the cost of living in 173 major cities around the world. The study is conducted annually for 30 years. This is reported by Spot.
Analysts of the British magazine compared the prices of 400 goods and services in dollars for the period from March to September this year. All cities are compared with New York, and its base rating is 100 points.
Experts estimate that living in the world's major cities has become more expensive by an average of 7.4 per cent. This is slightly less than last year's 8.1 per cent, but significantly higher than the average for 2017─2021.
Singapore and Zurich topped the ranking of cities with the most expensive living standards. Zurich was helped by the strengthening of the Swiss franc, while Singapore was helped by the high cost of transport and clothing.
Geneva, New York and Hong Kong are next. Los Angeles, Paris, Copenhagen, Tel Aviv and San Francisco also made it into the top ten.
However, analysts note that the survey was conducted before the outbreak of armed conflicts in the Middle East, which may have affected the exchange rate of the national currency and the prices of some goods in Israel. In addition, a slight weakening of the dollar explains some of the changes in the ranking.
Tashkent took 169th place (fifth from the end) in the ranking of the most expensive cities in the world with a base rating of 31 points. The place of the capital of Uzbekistan in the rating is between Tunisia and Karachi.
The cheapest city in the world for a long time remains the capital of Syria - Damascus (13 points), which is almost twice as much as the nearest in the ranking Tehran (20). Tripoli, Lusaka, Lagos, Buenos Aires, India's Ahmedabad and Chennai round out the top ten.
Damascus, Tehran and Tripoli have low prices for food and household and personal care products. In addition, Caracas recorded the highest inflation rate of more than 450 per cent.
