The ADB provides $100 million to support the construction of maternity centres in Uzbekistan
The Uzbek government has been granted a $100 million soft credit by the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to enhance perinatal health care for expectant mothers and their infants.

Despite an improvement from 38 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2010 to 30 fatalities in 2020, Uzbekistan's maternal mortality rate is still higher than the average for Central Asia and Europe. While Uzbekistan's neonatal mortality numbers have previously improved, the recent rise in the birth rate has also contributed to an increase in this measure.

The government will receive support from the Integrated Perinatal Care Project to modernise roughly 230 perinatal centres nationwide with updated clinical standards and protocols, energy-efficient medical equipment, and health worker capacity training.
