President Shavkat Mirziyoyev took part in a tree-planting event as part of the nationwide "Yashil Makon" project and launched the creation of the National Arboretum.

The creation of the National Arboretum has begun
Speaking at the event, the head of state noted that since time immemorial, during the celebration of Navruz and when a new baby was born, our compatriots, following good traditions, have planted saplings in their gardens, parks, alleys, and along roadsides, decorating them with flowers and fragrant plants.

Based on these noble values, the nationwide "Yashil Makon" project has been implemented over the past five years, planting 200 million saplings annually.

Over this period, 942 green gardens and public parks have been created on an area of over 2,000 hectares, and "Yangi Uzbekistan" gardens have been established in 47 areas. In the republic's mountainous, desert, and steppe regions, 256,000 hectares of forests have been established. Protective forest plantations have been established on the dried-out bed of the Aral Sea, covering 2 million hectares. To prevent the harmful effects of winds and dust and sand storms, a 60-kilometer-long "green belt" has been created in 33 districts.

Last year, modern nurseries were commissioned in the Khodjeyli, Yangibazar, Gijduvan, Balykchi, and Akhangaran districts, enabling the annual cultivation of 5.5 million ornamental tree seedlings. Furthermore, to combat desertification, based on Chinese experience, drought-resistant halophyte parks covering 50 hectares were established for the first time this year in the Arnasay, Karakul, Mubarek, and Karmana districts and the city of Nukus. As noted, the halophyte seeds grown here will help reduce soil salinity on thousands of hectares of land and increase their fertility.

Overall, the level of greenery in the republic has increased from 8 to 14.2 percent in a short period of time. A new presidential decree signed last week sets an ambitious goal: to increase the overall level of greenery in the country to 30 percent, and the area of green space per capita to 10 square meters by 2030.

To this end, a "green space" will be created over 10,000 hectares in the Surkhandarya region, and an 84-kilometer-long "green barrier" will be created in the Syrdarya region. New forests will be established on 1 million hectares of desert land in Karakalpakstan, 300,000 hectares each in Navoi and Bukhara, and 85,000 hectares in Khorezm. Each regional governor will also be responsible for creating botanical gardens and dendrological parks covering an area of at least 100 hectares, as well as establishing at least 20 shaded walking paths.

It was noted that in the current context, when environmental and public health issues are becoming increasingly pressing, the recommendations of the International Center for Molecular Allergology on the selection and planting of tree species adapted to local conditions are particularly important.

Starting this year, "green" technical schools will be established in each region, where 10,000 specialists are planned to be trained annually using dual education. Botanical gardens and dendrological parks will provide practical training for students from these technical schools, as well as research platforms for scientists.

The President of our country proposed further expanding the participation of the public and parliamentarians in the creation of green spaces at their local level. Previously, up to 250 million soums were allocated from the budget for each project under the "My Garden" program. Now, this amount will be increased to 400 million soums. Up to 1 hectare of land will be allocated for each green garden and public park—on plots selected by residents themselves, located near their homes, and, crucially, with access to water. Starting this season, each deputy of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis will also be allocated 412 million soums to create a green zone and a green garden in their constituency.

The head of state emphasized that it is no coincidence that our people have such wise sayings as "A good deed leaves a garden," "One seedling—a thousand blessings," and "If a child is born or you're planning a wedding, plant a tree." He emphasized that such national values are more relevant today than ever.

In this regard, the President called on mahalla chairmen, representatives of the older generation, women activists, and all active residents to more widely promote national customs, traditions, and values locally by creating clubs and associations, and to lead the planting of seedlings and flowers on every street, in every home, along roads, as well as trees and shrubs in meadows.

A National Arboretum is being created in the capital on a 108-hectare site. This year, an in vitro laboratory, medicinal plant centers, seed production, and breeding centers, all being built using the "science-project-practice" principle, will be commissioned.

The President expressed his sincere gratitude to Ismail Belen, Chairman of the United Nations Forum on Forests, Juliette Biao, Director of the Forum Secretariat, representatives of foreign diplomatic missions in Uzbekistan, and all participants.

At the end of the event, President Shavkat Mirziyoyev and the participants planted ornamental saplings on the first 5 hectares of the National Arboretum. Meanwhile, approximately 21,000 of our compatriots across all regions of the republic planted 88,000 saplings on an additional 164 hectares.
