European Union foreign ministers have approved the launch of a naval operation to ensure the safety of navigation in the Red Sea.

The EU decided to launch a military operation against the Yemeni Houthis
The main purpose of the operation will be to protect European ships. It is planned that the EU ships will react only to attacks from the sea and will not open fire towards land.

Although the EU mission will operate independently of the US-led Prosperity Guardian operation, close co-operation and information sharing between the two is envisaged.

Following the escalation of the conflict between Palestine and Israel, the Houthis have announced their intention to target Israeli territory and block the passage of ships associated with Israel through the waters of the Red Sea and the Bab el-Mandeb Strait.

As a result of the Houthi attacks on ships, including those not related to the Israeli side, many carriers have been forced to reroute their container ships, bypassing the Red Sea from the south towards Europe, resulting in a several-fold increase in shipping costs.
