According to Reuters, the new 2040 target will change Europe's energy mix.

In particular, coal power will be phased out and the overall use of fossil fuels will be reduced by 80 per cent. It will be replaced by solar, wind and nuclear power plants.

In addition, the European Commission published a document that outlined plans to capture and store hundreds of millions of tonnes of CO2 emissions by 2050.

While the overall target was within the range recommended by the EU's official climate advisers, the EU executive weakened some of the recommendations relating to agriculture. This was preceded by weeks of protests by farmers unhappy with the green initiatives.
