The Island That Could Stop Iran

A proposal to seize a strategic Iranian oil island has been voiced in the United States. According to a U.S. political figure, such a move could effectively paralyze Iran’s economy and drastically reduce its oil revenues.

The Island That Could Stop Iran
Keith Kellogg, a special envoy on Ukraine during the administration of Donald Trump, said the United States could isolate the economy of Iran by taking control of the strategic Khark Island.

Speaking on Fox News, Kellogg noted that the island plays a critical role in Iran’s oil exports. According to him, roughly 90% of the country’s oil shipments pass through the terminal located there.

Khark Island is considered the largest oil terminal in the Persian Gulf region. Oil arrives at the facility via four pipelines and is stored in tanks with a combined capacity of up to 30 million barrels. The terminal’s throughput capacity is estimated at about 10 million barrels per day.

Kellogg argued that control over the island would effectively deprive Iran of its ability to export oil. “If you take Khark Island, it isolates Iran’s economy,” he said.

He added that such a scenario could also limit Tehran’s ability to support its partners, including China and Russia.
