Palestinians, including those who fled fighting in the north, were ordered to evacuate to the so-called safe zone in al-Mawasi, a thin strip of mostly agricultural land along the Mediterranean coast near the border with Egypt.

According to the UN, fighting in the Khan Younis and Deir al-Balah areas has forced tens of thousands of people to flee south to the Rafah neighbourhood, where more than a million people are in extremely overcrowded conditions.

According to the UN, about 75 per cent of the Gaza Strip's population, some 1.7 million people, were already registered refugees before Israel called on Palestinians to leave the northern Gaza region.

According to the UN definition, Palestinian refugees are people whose place of residence was Palestine from 1 June 1946 to 15 May 1948 and who lost their home and livelihood due to the 1948 war. Their children are also eligible for refugee status.
