The Mayor of New York City Faces Criminal Charges
World
For the first time in U.S. history, charges have been brought against New York City Mayor Eric Adams while he is in office.
Documents published by The New York Times indicate his guilt on five counts, including bribery. According to case materials, the charges involve receiving bribes from foreign representatives, wire fraud, and illegal donations from foreign nationals to support his election campaign in exchange for favors and assistance from the mayor.
The investigation suggests that for nearly ten years, Eric Adams received "illicit material benefits" from various individuals, including foreign businesspeople, in exchange for support from New York City authorities. The case materials state that the mayor accepted bribes not only in cash but also in the form of paid flights, luxury hotel stays, "lavish international trips," and other privileges.
"As Adams' fame and power grew, his foreign benefactors sought to profit from their corrupt connections with him, especially after it became clear in 2021 that Adams would become the Mayor of New York City," reads the 57-page indictment.
Searches were conducted at the official's residence last night.
