A total solar eclipse occurred on August 12, marking the only total solar eclipse of 2026. Totality lasted a maximum of 2 minutes and 18 seconds, with the path of totality crossing Greenland, Iceland, northern Russia, Spain and a small part of Portugal.
A partial eclipse was visible across a much wider area, including Europe, parts of North Africa and North America. According to NASA, the maximum duration of totality visible from Earth was 2 minutes and 18 seconds.
The next total solar eclipse will take place on August 2, 2027. It will last considerably longer, with totality reaching 6 minutes and 23 seconds at its maximum. The path of totality will cross southern Spain, North Africa, including Egypt, as well as Saudi Arabia and Yemen.
NASA calculations put the maximum duration of totality in 2027 at 6 minutes and 23.2 seconds. At the point of greatest duration, the path of totality will be approximately 257 kilometres wide.
Solar eclipses should only be viewed with appropriate eye protection. Ordinary sunglasses are not designed to provide safe protection when looking directly at the Sun.
