The US to Supply Ukraine with Anti-Personnel Mines
World
Since the start of the war, Ukraine has become the most heavily mined country in the world, and full demining will take decades.
According to The Washington Post, this is the Biden administration's response to the advance of Russian forces in the Donetsk region. The Pentagon also considers mines to be "one of the most effective steps" in slowing Russia's advance.
Ukraine has pledged not to mine areas populated by civilians. A source for the newspaper also noted that these are "self-destructing" mines, which deactivate themselves, lose battery power, and become inert, reducing risks for civilians.
The United States (like Russia) is not among the 160 countries that have banned anti-personnel mines.
The newspaper highlights that Russian Armed Forces have actively used these explosive devices to prevent Kyiv from reclaiming occupied territories.
Amnesty International has condemned the supply of anti-personnel mines to Ukraine.
In response to reports that the US has begun delivering such munitions to Ukraine, the human rights organization issued a press release.
“Anti-personnel mines are weapons that maim and kill civilians long after conflicts have ended, and they have no place in the arsenal of any state,” said Ben Linden, Advocacy Director for Europe and Central Asia at Amnesty International.
