The US will cut military spending by 40%

US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth has ordered the development of a plan to reduce the defense budget by 8% annually over the next five years, totaling a 40% cut. The Washington Post reported this.
According to the report, the spending reduction plan must be submitted by February 24. President Donald Trump's administration has identified 17 areas that will not face cuts. These include operations to protect the US southern border, modernization of the nuclear arsenal and missile defense systems, procurement of kamikaze drones, submarines, and ammunition.
The report does not mention whether current funding levels will be maintained for the European Command, which plays a key role in supporting Ukraine in the war with Russia, the Central Command overseeing Middle Eastern operations, or the Africa Command, which manages several thousand US troops on the continent.
The US defense budget for 2025 is projected to be approximately $850 billion. Hegseth notes that if the plan is implemented, it will be the Pentagon's largest budget reduction since 2013. Senior Pentagon officials estimate that $50 billion in savings could remain in the US budget next year, which might be allocated to developing an air defense system similar to Israel's Iron Dome.
For reference, the Iron Dome is a system designed to protect against unguided tactical rockets with a range of 50 to 200 kilometers. It was developed by Israel’s Rafael company in the early 2000s. A single battery can protect an area of up to 1,500 square kilometers.
