Under the leadership of President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev, a video conference call on training of engineering personnel and further improvement of higher education institutions has started, spokesman for the head of Uzbekistan Sherzod Asadov said.
The conference is attended by rectors from 36 universities.
Shavkat Mirziyoyev emphasized that in the current complex situation, all countries rely on internal resources and strive for innovation.
In recent years, Uzbekistan has significantly emphasized science, education, and innovation.
In particular, over the past four years, 2.2 trillion sum has been allocated for the implementation of 1727 practical, innovative, fundamental, and startup projects, including 152 billion sum for 176 engineering projects.
Expenditures on scientific and engineering design works have doubled, with 41% of these funds going to state enterprises, 34% to the private sector, and 25% to higher education institutions.
It was shown that universities are limited to conducting fundamental research, and there are very few practical developments for the economy.
Additionally, it was noted that hundreds of startups and innovative engineering projects remain unrealised.
The head of state emphasised that there is a gap between university and industry. The activity of rectors who do not get acquainted with new technologies, do not study modern equipment and machines was criticised. It was also noted that mayors and ministers do not provide assistance in this matter.
The Uzbek leader has put forward new initiatives to develop the industry. Here are just a few of them:
– Teaching and research processes in 36 technical universities will be completely changed based on best practices;
– The university will move to a full dual system of education. Sciences will be reduced by at least 30 per cent;
– The university's teaching will be adapted to the programmes of the Technical University of Dresden (Germany) and the University of Tsukuba (Japan).
