Tokayev called on the US not to threaten the countries of Central Asia
Political
During a meeting with Joseph Biden and the leaders of Central Asian countries in New York, Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev called on the US President to ratify the protocol for a nuclear-weapon-free Central Asia. This was reported by the press service of the President of Kazakhstan.
It is noted that the countries that ratified this protocol pledged not to use nuclear weapons against or threaten the countries of Central Asia.
According to Tokayev, this step completes the process of institutionalizing the region’s nuclear-free status. It will also be an important step in international efforts towards nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.
It should be noted that Central Asia is the only region in the Northern Hemisphere where the deployment of nuclear arsenals is prohibited. The protocol has been ratified by China, Russia, France and the UK. The United States remains the only nuclear power to sign but not ratify the protocol.
