U.S. President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), seeking $5 billion in damages. The lawsuit concerns what Trump describes as a deliberate distortion of his remarks in a Panorama documentary covering the events of January 6, 2021.

The complaint was filed on December 15 in a Florida court. Trump’s attorneys accuse the BBC of violating commercial law and engaging in “intentional, malicious, and misleading” editing of his speeches. According to the filing, the editing altered the meaning of Trump’s words in the context of the Capitol riot carried out by his supporters.

The BBC has not yet officially commented on the lawsuit. In November, the corporation issued an apology for the editing but rejected Trump’s demand for compensation, stating that it saw no grounds for defamation claims.

Trump first announced his intention to sue in early November, accusing the broadcaster of manipulating his words and sending a formal legal warning to the BBC.

The controversy erupted after The Telegraph published an internal memo by Michael Prescott, a former independent adviser to the BBC’s editorial standards committee. The memo suggested that the editing of Trump’s speech in the Panorama program may have distorted its original meaning.
