Richard Grenell briefly served as the acting Director of National Intelligence during Trump’s previous term but eventually stepped down from the position.

Reuters notes that Grenell supported the creation of "autonomous zones" in Ukraine as part of a peace agreement between Kyiv and Moscow and opposed Ukraine's NATO membership.

Grenell’s supporters highlight that he served for many years in diplomatic service in Europe and has "deep knowledge of European affairs."

From 2018 to 2020, Grenell was the U.S. Ambassador to Germany, and from 2019 to 2021, he was the U.S. President’s Special Envoy for negotiations between Serbia and Kosovo.
