Trump Questions US Commitment to NATO

US President Donald Trump signaled a possible US exit from NATO, criticizing allies for refusing to participate in the Strait of Hormuz operation amid the conflict with Iran.
In an interview with The Telegraph, Trump called NATO a “paper tiger,” noting that the alliance did not support the US in military actions against Iran. According to him, NATO members did not join the operation, although the US has participated in similar missions worldwide, including in Ukraine.
The president stressed that the lack of support from allies was “hard to believe” and caused frustration. The US planned to ensure safe passage for ships through the Strait of Hormuz, which handles about 20% of global oil and up to 30% of liquefied natural gas. Germany, France, Italy, Spain, and Sweden refused to participate, angering the White House.
Trump warned that countries refusing assistance could face a “very bad future,” and the US will reassess NATO’s value after the Iran conflict. Secretary of State Marco Rubio added that the final decision rests with the president.
