Trump Revokes Sanctions on Israeli Settlers
World
U.S. President Donald Trump has revoked sanctions imposed on Israeli settlers in the West Bank by the previous administration of Joe Biden. This decision, announced by the White House press office on January 20, 2024, was one of the first executive orders signed by Trump upon his return to the presidency.
In February 2024, Joe Biden signed an order to tighten measures against Israeli settlers and groups operating in cities and settlements in the West Bank. This directive authorized the Treasury Department and State Department to include individuals and groups involved in acts of violence in the sanctions list. The primary goal of Biden’s administration was to hold accountable those responsible for violations against Palestinians.
Specifically, the directive targeted unrest in the city of Huwwara, the arson of Palestinian homes, and the killing of a civilian, aiming to identify and punish the perpetrators.
On his first day back in office, Donald Trump overturned this directive. The decision aligned with Trump’s traditionally pro-Israel stance in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The revocation of sanctions coincided with the second day of a ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas. During this period, 90 Palestinian prisoners were exchanged for three Israeli hostages held in Gaza.
