Trump: Ukraine should forget about NATO membership
World
U.S. President Donald Trump held his first government meeting at the White House in Washington. During this meeting, he made strong statements regarding an agreement with Ukraine on natural resources, security guarantees, and U.S. trade relations with the European Union (EU).
Trump announced that he is scheduled to meet with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday and sign an agreement on natural resources. According to him, this agreement will provide Ukraine with "some security guarantees," but the primary guarantees should be provided by Europe.
He emphasized that he sees this agreement as an opportunity for Ukraine to repay its debts to the U.S.:
"We have made such a deal that, as a result, we will get our money back and generate significant profits in the future," he said.
Furthermore, Trump openly stated that Ukraine should forget about joining NATO. "I can say this clearly: (Ukraine) can forget about NATO. I believe that the NATO issue is what caused the war in Ukraine," he said.
At the same time, he mentioned that the U.S. would help Ukraine reclaim territories occupied by Russia as much as possible. However, Washington has yet to disclose what concessions it is demanding from both Moscow and Kyiv.
Meanwhile, it has been reported that Russian and U.S. diplomats will meet in Istanbul on Friday to discuss relations between the two countries and the activities of their embassies.
Now, it remains to be seen what results will come from Trump and Zelensky’s meeting on Friday, as well as negotiations with Russia.
