Donald Trump stated on Sunday that Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed interest in holding a meeting about the war in Ukraine.
The newly elected U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Sunday that Russian President Vladimir Putin has expressed his desire to meet as soon as possible.
“President Putin said he wants to meet with me as soon as possible,” Trump said at the America Fest convention organized by Turning Point. “So we have to wait a little bit, but we must stop this war. This war is horrible, horrible.”
Preparing to assume office in the White House in January, Trump previously stated during his election campaign that, if elected, he could end the war “within 24 hours.” He also recently criticized President Joe Biden’s policy change allowing Ukraine to use U.S.-supplied weapons to strike inside Russian territory.
Trump further mentioned that military aid to Ukraine might “possibly” decrease once he takes office. Ukraine heavily relies on its international partners for military, financial, and humanitarian assistance, enabling it to function as a state and continue resisting Russia after nearly three years of war.
On Sunday, speaking about the war, Trump said, “People are dying… It’s a flat plane, and bullets are flying, very powerful bullets, very powerful weapons, and the only thing that can stop them is a human body.”
Earlier this month, Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Paris alongside French President Emmanuel Macron ahead of the reopening of the Notre Dame Cathedral. After the meeting, Trump called for an “immediate ceasefire.”
